INTEGRATIE - videobiënnale van 21-12- 2017 - 08-03-2018
Na een succesvol eerste editie in 2015 is in Van der Helstplein Etalages in Amsterdam nu de tweede editie van de videobiënnale te bekijken. In twaalf etalages zijn op kleine displays video’s van zestien kunstenaars te zien. Elke video geeft op geheel eigen wijze een beeld van het begrip integratie. Je kunt langslopen of even stil blijven staan, een vleug opvangen van wat er zich achter de ramen afspeelt of even helemaal verdwijnen in een andere wereld, zo midden op straat.
Het begrip integratie wordt veel gebruikt in het politieke en publieke debat. Dan hebben we het over de culturele integratie van verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Maar het begrip integratie wordt ook op andere terreinen gebruikt zoals in de economie, informatica, psychologie en fysiologie. De definitie van integratie is: het maken van of opnemen in een groter, harmoniserend geheel. Het gaat dus over het aanpassingsproces van eenwording. En in dat proces worden ook zijn tegenpolen opgeroepen: desintegratie(uiteenvallen) en segregatie (afzonderen). In de getoonde videos is een ruime interpretatie van dit begrip uitgewerkt.

Ter gelegenheid van een installatie in de W2Fabriek in Den Bosch organiseerde ik themapicknicks voor verschillende groepen mensen in 2015. Deze films heb ik opnieuw bewerkt en in elkaar laten overvloeien tot een nieuw geheel. Doordat je niet hoort waar de gesprekken over gaan kijk je naar hoe mensen zich tot elkaar verhouden en hoe ze zich bewegen. De handgebaren worden niet ondersteund door een verhaal of stem en worden daardoor onderdeel van het beeld. De compositie van de figuren varieert door hun bewegingen of doordat de ene groep overvloeit/integreert in een andere. Het voedsel als stilleven verandert van compositie als in een levend schilderij waarin mensen naakt en gekleed vertraagt bewegen.

Een film over hoe het project 'Europa' optimistisch en misschien wel naief in gang is gezet en de dreiging van het einde van dit politieke Europa. In de film is dit gegeven verbeeld met Europa als jong naief vrij meisje en de stier. De stier brengt haar naar nieuw land waarmee zij één wordt als naamgeefster. De stier, trots op zijn nieuw bezit, ziet al snel overal gevaar. Uit angst te verliezen wat hij heeft, sluit hij haar in. Omdat het ingesloten-zijn het vrije Europa niet past, kwijnt ze weg en breekt op in stukken.
Nienke Brokke, symbolically uses the myth of Europe and Zeus in this video. In Brokke’s translation of the myth, the girl Europe commits herself free and willingly to become the start of the land Europe. Kind of naive but with free spirits she symbolizes the values of freedom of speech and choice, no borders and enlightenment. The Bull brings her just on the right spot. The job is done and he feels the urge to protect his treasure bride. By doing so he sees enemies everywhere. Fear is leading him and wisdom declines. Wire and gates finely surround free Europe. As it is against Europe’s character to be in this enclosed condition she suffers and falls apart.

“For what are you praying, if you haven’t lost anything yet?” said the man with a bag of colored pencils. “Drop the sunshade and bring a scoop of sand” said the man with a carriage filled with pointy sticks. “To see if you are awake or not, find the berries with one eye” said the man with two mugs in each hand. They said it just before I started to build a house.
I still haven’t lost anything but I still pray, I still haven’t brought a scoop of sand and I still haven’t figured out if I am awake. The house was built and the words of the men turned into a bed, window and a chair.
Every night when I lie down on the bed, it repeats its words. Every night when I look out of the window, it repeats its words. Every night when I sit down on the chair for a cup of tea, it repeats its words.
One day, I decided to burn the bed, window and chair down and I did. It was the first night when I did not hear any words in the house. After long days of mute, I stepped out of the house. By the door, there was a bag of colored pencils, carriage with pointy sticks and two mugs.

Sanneke Huisman Cindy Moorman makes structures visible - ranging from sculptural forms to social rituals. With drawings, performances, paintings, photography and interventions her oeuvre can be considered as much formalistic as socially rooted. Meaning and form are abstracted by Moorman; she makes existing social rituals her own, with a major focus on its physicality.

Voor de VDHP-biënnale voert Lies Neve haar installatie FRAME in miniatuurvorm uit. Een animatie van een dansend paar wordt geprojecteerd op een achterwand met daarop één van de stills afgebeeld. Steeds opnieuw komen beide dansers tot stilstand, precies samenvallend in die éne pose, om zich er vervolgens weer van los te maken en uitbundig door hun eigen silhouet heen te dansen. De lichtprojectie van de dansers is in een doorlopend spel verwikkelt met hun vastgelegde beeld.
Het werk van Lies Neve recyclet beelden die er al zijn. Haar werk pakt de plaatjes op, alsof ze van de film ‘afgevallen’ zijn, losgeraakt van hun oorspronkelijke context. Terugkerend thema is het menselijk verlangen om meester over zichzelf en de wereld om zich heen te zijn.

Het werken met Tipp-ex in bestaande teksten is soort ‘écriture automatique’ waarin ik mijn plaats kan bepalen binnen de tijd en de dingen die in mijn leven gebeuren. Ik spreek het onbewuste aan en kom op deze manier tot nieuwe, onverwachte teksten en inzichten. Het geeft mij ruimte voor bezinning en reflectie. After a successful first edition in 2015, there is the second edition of the video biennale at the Van der Helstplein Windows in Amsterdam. In twelve windows there are videos of sixteen artists on small displays. Each film gives an overall picture of the concept of "integration". You can walk along or stand still, catch a spot of what's happening behind the windows or just disappear in another world, right in the middle of the street.
The term integration is widely used in political and public debate. Then we talk about the cultural integration of different populations. But the term integration is also used in other fields such as economics, computer science, psychology and physiology. The definition of integration is: making or incorporating into a larger, harmonizing whole. It is thus about the adaptation process of unification. And in that process, his opposites are also called: disintegration (fall apart) and segregation (isolate). A broad interpretation of this concept has been developed in the videos shown.
